As it is stress awareness week we thought it was a great time for us to talk about what we do to help us relax and unwind after a stressful day.

It may be helpful to let you know our favourite way to deal with stress in the moment, it is with the 5 by 5 rule - If it is not going to matter in 5 years, don't spend more than 5 minutes upset by it. While this may not help all of the time it definitely helps to put some things in perspective for us.

Onto the ways that we help ourselves unwind at the end of the day and help promote a less stressful mindset for ourselves.

    Unwind with exercise

While this doesn't always appeal to us after a long hard day at the office in which we have felt particularly stressed. It does however always make us feel better, through the release of endorphins coupled with the ability to let out some of our frustrations. Plus the mentality that we have taken the time to do something that benefits ourselves is comforting.

    Have a long hot bath

Fill a bath with bubble bath and muscle soak bath salts, jump in for at least half an hour and believe us when we say the stress seems to melt away. We put on some relaxing music or simply sit in the quiet and by just taking that relaxing time for ourselves makes the world of difference in helping us unwind.

Fill your home with relaxing scents and sounds

'Relaxing' room sprays exist for reason, along with our obsession for candles (see they all do serve a purpose!). Fill your home with your favourite scents and put on some relaxing background music, and after a while your body with start to associate these senses with relaxation. For reference our favourite scents are lavender, tonka bean, vanilla and jasmine.

    Make your bedroom your sanctuary

For us it's essential that our bedroom feels like a safe and cosy relaxing place for us. Having plenty of soft pillows, cosy throws and bedding all helps us feel relaxed. Along with having our bedroom in a serene colour palette, pick colours that make you feel happy and peaceful, if you need a redecorate, trust us it is worth it.

    Read a book

Now we know you will have all heard this a million times, but turning off all the tech at least an hour before you go to sleep and replacing it with reading a book has been scientifically proven to help. Scientifically. What much more do you need than that? Reading not only helps us feel relaxed but it is also gives us a little sense of achievement when we finish a book.

Get cosy nightwear you feel comfortable in

Of course our nightwear and slippers are very important to us. Getting into something we feel comfortable and cosy in once get out of our warm bath (see what we did there?) just gets us into the mindset of lounging and de-stressing. It also helps us sleep better which of course significantly impacts our mental health when it comes to dealing with stress.

    Create a regular schedule

This helps us immensely in feeling we have control over our lives and therefore makes us feel more relaxed on a bigger scale, so the smaller stresses that pop up, tend to impact us less. Start sticking to a night time routine, with what time you have a bath, do your skincare, go to bed, wake up, etc. In no time at all it will become second nature (and then you won't have to stress about the schedule!)

We hope this helps give you an idea about where to start when trying to create a relaxing, unwinding routine for yourself to decompress from the stresses of everyday life. Let us know in the comments if you put any of these into practice and whether they help you, or if you have any other suggestions!

Podcasts are the new IT thing in Pretty You London HQ - granted some of us are big on the whole crime themed podcasts, (not for the faint hearted, or those of us prone to paranoia if a man smiles at us in the supermarket, heaven forbid!). The real buzz however is all about the beauty podcasts, we wanted to round up our favourites and the ones that we think are amazing for those of you that are new to the podcast game. Be prepared for your commutes, your cleaning and every other chore in your life to get a whole lot more entertaining!

    Glowing Up

If you only listen to one podcast, make it this one. If you want a girly chit-chat that will make you feel like you're hanging out with your friends (aka the point of a podcast) then this one is amazing! Esther's and Caroline's true love for limited edition products, and hatred of working out, makes you feel like they are your kindred spirits and that you're not alone in your 'glow ups' and 'glow downs'.

    Full Coverage

This is a great podcast of 2 friends talking about makeup, one a professional and one not a professional but a beauty addict all the same. It is great to listen in on different girls opinions on the latest beauty products and trends, just so you get an honest insight on whether you should buy into them or not. Pre-warning: most of them we do want to, either way.

    Mirror Mirror

If this isn't the best concept for a podcast, then we dont know what is. Each bi-weekly episode is about a completely different woman's beauty routine, with women from all different careers, ethnicities, lifestyles, etc sharing, this podcast is truly enjoyable. For those of you that don't have an overwhelming sense of curiosity to know what other women are using, then we applaud you, we however need to know.

    I'm Over It

We defy you to listen to this podcast and not develop a girl crush on Atlanta, and all her podcast guests for that matter. This is the ultimate girl talk podcast, they chat all about botox, cat calling, vision boards, all the way into the more serious topics such as sexual assault and life after the event. Overall a really great podcast that makes you feel as though you've spent some quality time with your best friends.

    Fat Mascara

As 2 of the most experienced beauty editors in the industry Jessica and Jennifer have access to a whole host of amazing guests, any advice they want to give, we want to take. With beauty tips ranging from the newest concept of facials to the 'pink bubble theory' (you need to listen to the podcast), we are in love with this honest, fun and informative podcast.

    Breaking Beauty

This podcast recommendation comes with a warning... your bank account is going to take a huge decline because of all your new skincare purchases. Each week Jill and Charlene talk to the founder of a skincare (or makeup) brand, one word, inspiring. We love this podcast because it is so fascinating and informative! You fall in love with the brand's stories and it is amazing to hear about the science behind the ingredients of each brands most loved products. Be prepared to become a skincare goddess.

    Lady Lovin'

We would be lying if we said we didn't listen to this podcast firstly because it was founded by Lo Bosworth, one of our favourite girls from The Hills, hello nostalgia. However, we continued to listen because we fell in love with her co-hosts Jilly Hendrix and Greta Titelman just as much and the forever ranging topics from beauty, all the way to business.

    At Home With...

Hosted by Lily Pebbles and Anna Gardner, 2 of the biggest OG british beauty bloggers, it it should come as no surprise that they have a huge array of amazing guests on their show. From guests such as Terry De Gunzburg, Alexia Inge and Liz Earle, founders of some of the biggest beauty brands we know and love, all the way to our favourite fashion and beauty bloggers like Patricia Bright, this relaxed 'chilled on the sofa with friends' vibe podcast is a true winner.

    The Emma Guns Show

Again another podcast that centers around an interview aspect, Emma has guests on the podcast from the health, wellness and beauty fields. Perfect for getting the opinion of an expert, we love it because it is informative, inspiring and most of all entertaining because after all, that is all we want. With currently 150 episodes and counting, it is one you can really sink your teeth into!

Let us know in the comments below your favourite podcasts because we love a good recommendation and honestly, the more we have in our rotation, the better!

It's no secret we love our slippers and nightwear, our beds and of course, our sleep! So naturally, sleep awareness week is something we want to address and celebrate! Best of all we get to do that from the comfort of our beds, without being judged, which makes us immensely happy.

Gone are the days when it was thought to be 'cool', to be so 'busy' that you had to stay up most of the night, drinking coffee, working relentlessly and wearing eye bags as though they were a badge of honor... Needless to say, we have never been classified as cool and we have never not indulged ourselves in, much needed and much wanted sleep. Instead the tables have turned, and now having a thorough self love pampering night routine is what we all aspire to.

However what if you struggle to sleep? With the National Sleep Foundation campaigning the important of sleep for general wellbeing, both mentally and physically, for this year's 'Begin with sleep' campaign, now is the time to get our nightly routine and sleep pattern perfected.

    1. Turn off the tech! We know, we know, we all love our phones, our TVs and laptops, but the hour before we are ready to go to sleep is time to unwind without lights beaming in our faces.

    2. Melatonin, often referred to as the 'sleep hormone' is what signals to the brain that it is time to sleep, however it is drastically disrupted when we have any lights infiltrating our sleep environment. This problem is easily solved with a glamorous eye mask, that will ensure you are engulfed into complete darkness. P.S. a silky one will also help to keep all of your face and eye creams in place to soak in!

    3. Relaxing, unwinding and calming your mind are all important to get that deep sleep we desire. Taking a nice relaxing bath with epsom salts, that are scientifically proven to help your muscles relax also, is the perfect way to take a little time out and relax before bed.

    4. Warm yourself through into blissful cosiness with a hot drink before bed. It goes without saying, that this is a no caffeine zone, instead, have a lovely herbal tea such as chamomile or lavender to relax. If they aren't your thing, then we give you permission to have a warm milky cocoa, grandma style. There is also studies that support the concept of not drinking any caffeine after midday... good luck to us all with that one!

    5. Scent matters, so invest in a 'sleep spray'. Some are obviously fancier (*cough* more expensive!) than others, but even febreze do a great 'sleep serenity' range that includes lavender, jasmine and milk and honey scents. Lush also do an amazing body lotion that I am sure you are all probably familiar with, called 'sleepy' that is said to help you drift right off.

    6. Do not take naps! I know that majority of us work a 9-5 so this is impossible to do during the day anyway, however I think we can all admit we are guilty of getting in straight from work and falling asleep on the couch... (we swear we aren't old!). And whilst these 'power naps' make us feel a bit more awake to get on with our other nightly duties such as dinner, showering, etc. that is because that tired feeling has been satisfied, making it that much more difficult to fall asleep properly come bedtime.

    7. Set the right temperature. I know a lot us love having the heating on full blast, however studies have shown that a cooler sleeping environment is actually much better for us. Ideally your bedroom should be around 18.5 degrees and you get warm and cosy through the use of blankets and duvets... hello hygge!

    8. Get yourself a good book. Immersing yourself in another world for 1-2 chapters is the perfect way to unwind right before you are about to fall asleep. It also helps you introduce ideas to your subconscious, making you much more likely to dream about something you want to dream about, as opposed to worrying about the stresses of normal life.

    9. Now that we have covered all the other senses, last but not least is sound. We love listening to some nice relaxing spa music, or raindrops on the window, who doesn't love that sound curled up all warm in bed? No one. However if you are someone who needs absolute silence, then earplugs should serve you well.

    10. Lastly try some sleeping techniques. There are tons all over the internet that you can research and give a go, however our favourite is simply get into a super comfortable position and stay very, very still, do not move. The hardest part of this is ignoring the little itches you get - your body is doing this to see if you react and move, therefore signalling that you're not asleep. Let you mind wander wherever it wants to, hopefully somewhere lovely, and after a while, you tend to drift right off without even noticing. If this is the part you struggle with, instead concentrate solely on your breathing, keeping it slow, until you fall asleep.

Of course, having a good pair of pyjamas is also really important in your nightly routine so that you feel comfortable. Our new Pretty You bamboo nightwear collection is amazing for sleep, it is hypo-allergenic, temperature regulating and made from one of the softest fabrics in the world!
